I was walking on down the road
came to a pitchfork crossroad
it was a devil meeting-place at night
where the deals go down
I could not choose a way to go
I did not know which way I was bound

And when he smiled, his gold tooth flashed
by the moonlight up above
it shot a gleam into my eye
I squinted and I turned my head
it felt like a slap to the face
I can’t believe what he just said

So I turned my other cheek
and it stung me, stung me twice
as I tried to let go of his hand
with every ounce of strength I could summon
Now I was standing in his shadow people
All I could do was just start running
Now I was feeling like I had lost a quart of blood
and my head was hanging down low
and I was shuffling my feet, shuffling my feet
like a train on its track
now when I fled fire I met flood
and now I got to get on back

Now sister moon seemed to slide
down sky whispering time to a
mortal from ancient silver lips
this ain’t no nightmare no bad dream
got to ask yourself what there is to believe in
when this world gets cold and mean

Then southern star winked its eye
and went streaking across the heavens
to disappear into the night
leaving me alone with what I did choose
I got an old familiar feeling
I was re-living them old crossroad blues
